If you’ve ever thought it would be sweet to have a fully automated apartment, where you could control your appliances and devices with just a click or two of a button, with WiFi such a future may have arrived.
For $49.95, an innovative gadget called WeMo, which comes to us from the innovative minds at Belkin. They’ve created a router-like device that syncs up all the power functionality for your home appliances and then gives you a control dashboard right on your iPhone.
Which means that you can do things like turn lights on or off, start the oven warming for tonight’s pizza dinner, turn on the heater so the house won’t be chilly when you arrive home, and other truly innovative stuff, all from your phone.
For those of us who are forgetful, control freaks or just plain lazy, this device has lots of potential. Maybe you’re like me and just can’t remember to turn the thermostat off before you leave the house. Or maybe you’re like my roommate and manage to leave the iron plugged in as you fly out the door, late to work again.
WeMo can take care of all that. It also has a scheduling function, so if you want the heater to come on fifteen minutes before you arrive home from work each day at 6 p.m., no problem. Just schedule it with WeMo and you’ll be good to go.
Testers of the device say that it is remarkably convenient for everything from making coffee to turning lights in other rooms off and on when you’re already in bed. What apartment appliances would you like to automate? Is there a WeMo in your future?
